More brown grass means less green in the pocket
By Lauren Seabrook
Topeka — Mowers for Green Boys Lawn Care are cutting the grass where they still can. Most of what they see is dead. Jeremiah Richards and his wife own the company and he says the more brown on the ground, the less green in his pocket. Richards says, "Early in the year it wasn't too bad, we got some rain. But, now everything's just really dry and people are cutting back on mowing their lawns and a lot of services so we're pretty slow right now."

Grass in Topeka is fried from the extreme temperatures we've had, and it's hurting local lawn companies. 49 News Reporter Lauren Seabrook tells us what one family owned business is doing to mow through the problem.
They still have some grass to cut, but Richards worries it will only get worse before it gets better. He say, "As far dormant as the grass has gone at this point, I think it's going to take a little while for it to come back. We're going to need a few rains and some cooler temperatures for a little while."
Richards says they'll just have to concentrate on other projects until business starts up again. He says, "Our customers are pretty good too. If we tell them we're kind of slow then they start looking for other projects like tree trimming and landscaping and we can kind of fill in while the grass isn't growing."
Richards is thankful that his loyal customers can push him through this heat wave, and says there's just one more thing he's counting on. He says, "We're looking forward to that relief that the meteorologists are predicting coming this weekend and hoping that will be the end of this intense heat."
Richards says last summer was really good for the company, and he hopes the pattern will continue and next summer will be even better. Richards and his wife have owned Green Boys Lawn Care now for 5 years.
